The i8 has a stiff core structure, similar to a DeLorean DMC-12. The backbone-style chassis is referred to as a “energy tunnel” by BMW, which sounds like the kind of sci-fi lingo that Joss Whedon forbade on Firefly. A tangle of batteries and their related liquid-cooling gear are stuffed into the box, allowing the i8 to have the lowest center of gravity of any BMW, as well as perfect 50/50 weight distribution.
